House Update07 Jun, 2009 | Posted by: Adam Posegate | RSS | Google Reader

We live in a new neighborhood, where we all bought the houses contemporaneously.  We received letters notifying us that the builders had noticed some of the houses' siding was warping, and that they were going to fix it.

We looked around our house, and sure enough, we had a great big ripple on the southern wall.  The cause?  It's not a siding defect as you might think.  Instead, it's due to the exterior plywood that was put up.  The plywood was retaining moisture when it was installed, and then the moisture barrier was put over that.  And finally, the siding installed.

Thankfully on Thursday they came to repair this.  I'm glad they caught it now, rather than later.  I already worry about mold with this house -- far more than our previous house.  Why?  Because it's so much more efficient!  The house is tight, and so it's more difficult to dry out.  Because of this high efficiency, our energy bills have been considerably lower than our old house.  That's "old" as in "previous" and as in "it was built in the 1800's."

The trade off is that moisture doesn't have anywhere to go.  We're remembering to run the fans in our bathrooms during and after showers and baths.  If anyone wants to give us an old yet functional de-humidifier, we will gladly accept.  I have basement plans for such a fiend.

driveway, carpet, other things?10 Nov, 2008 | Posted by: Adam Posegate | RSS | Google Reader

I've got to get some more funny pictures taken with my cellphone-- these posts, while fun to write, are starting to feel like the not-funny episodes of M*A*S*H!

Our house is nearly finished.  There are some things Lisa and I are keeping note of for our final walkthrough.  We don't want to jump the gun on telling someone to get some business taken care of-- not the least of which is the elongated toilet in the master bathroom wherein business will be taken care of.  Why isn't it there?  Our builder is all over these sorts of things.

This is house building is a very fun process.  It's great to see it go up, and I've even enjoyed working on it when able.  We've got a driveway and carpet now.

Lisa and I dream aloud together about the house we'll try to build one day.  We want a "family estate" where the kids and their families can all live, but with privacy and security.  We want it to feel like a Nordic lodge.  Most of all, we want it to feel like home, where Christ is glorified.

Wiring for sound30 Oct, 2008 | Posted by: Adam Posegate | RSS | Google Reader

Now I'm re-wiring the surround. Lisa prefers to have the speakers closer to the ceiling so that the sight of them isn't distracting. Here I'm moving the far right and far left speakers up higher and inward. They became the near right and near left. Then I ran new wire for the far left and far right speakers. Those will be in the ceiling with plates. Those are "someday" speakers.

H is handing me a box. I backed these boxes up behind into the wall. This way the drywall will entirely cover them up. When the walls are rocked, I'll drill a hole and pull the wire out each spot.

The "little inspector" is reviewing my work.

This picture demonstrates where the boxes are. They are 4 1/2" from the cross member down to the center of the box.

The siding is complete.  The stacks of boxes in the garage are for the porch.  On the exterior, we're still waiting for the porch to be completed.  We're also waiting on the garage floor and driveway to be poured.
